The Sparkletones formed in Spartanburg in 1955 by four teenagers that were classmates at Cowpens High School. By 1957, they burst on the national scene with the million selling ABC Paramount Record - Black Slacks. The group went on to appear on such national TV shows as The Nat King Cole Show, The Ed Sullivan Show and Dick Clark's American Bandstand. They left their mark on Rock & Roll and Rockabilly music with many artists naming them as an influence. The Sparkletones quit touring and returned home in 1960. Since that time, the group has re-united and in recent years appeared at venues in Europe and the US, including Las Vegas. The group was recently voted to be honored on the Spartanburg Music Trail. They have earned three gold and one platinum record and are members of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
Current members are:
Wayne Arthur: An original member of the group, Wayne plays bass and sings lead vocals. He also co-wrote several of the songs from the early days.
Jimmy "Sticks" Denton: Also an original member and the group's drummer, Jimmy co-wrote their million seller hit record ‘Black Slacks’.
Howard "Sparky" Childress: An original member of the group, Howard sings lead vocals and plays lead guitar. He also wrote several of the songs from the early days.
Randall Lark: A member of a 60’s version of the group, Randall joins the group again while original member Joe Bennett takes a hiatus due to health reasons.
